Hot Stove Update

Apparently the Red Sox are starting to see things my way.

Ladies and gentlemen, we may be getting a new center fielder from Boston very soon.

And his name won't remind you of a breakfast cereal.

  • I really wish the Twins could keep Santana.

If the Sox get him, I'm going to feel ashamed before I feel anything else. I'll have the winter to get over it, and I'm sure I will. But still...

I was talking with a buddy of mine a few days ago and he asked if I were the Sox GM, would I give up Ellsbury (and others, obviously) for Johan? Now I love Jacoby and I'm looking forward to seeing him at the top of the Sox lineup for years to come, but my answer was: absolutely. No question about it.

Pitchers of Sanatana's caliber become available once a decade, if even that often.

Hell, if Johan had the kind of run support that the Sox gave Beckett last season, he might've picked up another Cy (although all those home runs might still have kept him out...).

Still, the fact that the Twins can't keep him is another in a long line of signs that baseball, as much as I love it, needs some fixing.

  • With Lester now out of the picture, I don't know how you do that deal. If I were a Twins fan, I'd rather have Lester + Coco + mid-range prospect than Ellsbury and 2 mid-range prospects. And I'd prefer even more to get Melky + Hughes + a mid-level prospect. I can understand that Ellsbury is the most dynamic player, but he just doesn't seem like any more than another Kenny Lofton to me (who, by the way, is probably on the market again for much cheaper than the talent the Twins would give up to get Ellsbury).
